"Eliminates Sugar Caking Issues after Drying"

STI has developed a low residence time sugar conditioning system which effectively eliminates the problem of sugar caking after drying.

Caking occurs when damp sugar has not been fully conditioned and results in flow issues and lumps. This is caused by:

  • Sugar crystals leaving the centrifugals with a film of water around them - this film is saturated with sucrose and contains impurities
  • Drying the sugar removes the water quickly and the film becomes super saturated
  • Sucrose crystallizes from the film during the drying process but the rate is slower than the drying, so the sugar film remains super saturated
  • As sucrose crystallizes, the impurities remain in the film
  • The crystallization rate in dried sugar is extremely slow due to the low moisture content of the film and the high impurity- water ratio.
  • Caking is exacerbated if moisture migrates within the stored sugar through the release of moisture from one part of the sugar to another, the introduction of external moisture, and moisture migration due to temperature variations in the silo (e.g. cooler walls)
  • Crystallization in the super saturated film releases moisture which can contribute to caking
  • Caking occurs when two crystals are joined side by side

KEY BENEFITS

  • Provides an environment where the super saturation of the crystal film can be reduced without caking occurring. As the sucrose leaves the film, the impurities concentration rises and moisture is released. At this point, no more conditioning is possible and the sugar will be free flowing as it is now "conditioned"
  • Low conditioning times as the STI system requires 4 to 12 hours, compared to conventional systems which require 48 to 72 hours
  • Reduced storage requirements (silo capacity): for a 1000 TPD refinery, the STI system requires 8 hours or 333 T of storage capacity compared to conventional systems which require 48 hours or 2000 T of storage capacity
  • Power Consumption for a 1000 TPD refinery, the blowers and dehumidifier consume 20 kW with lower peak powers over a much shorter period of time

CAPACITY

Sizes up to 1,500 TPD refined sugar are standard.
